The indigenous Andean architecture, known as popular architecture or architecture without architects, involves cultural elements, social aspects, and geographical conditions, among others. This architecture is the result of a cyclical process of learning and experimentation the its people develop over time. It is the consequence of constant communication between the people and their environment, with a strong presence of the Andean cosmic vision in their decisions. Traditionally, the locals themselves build their own houses. They use local materials, such as earth, river stones or volcanic rocks, eucalyptus wood, straw (dry grass), reeds (similar to bamboo) and Andean clay tiles. With all these components, the inhabitants achieve perfect harmony between the natural landscape and the cultural landscape.
