The bulb dome, or onion dome, in Orthodox architecture is the embodiment of prayer, the desire for heaven. A dome at the base of the drum resembles a handle flame. The golden dome represents eternity and heavenly glory. The blue domes are stars, most often dedicated to Our Lady. Their blue colour symbolized purity and the stars represent the Star of Bethlehem. The green colour of the dome is meant to show the outpouring of the Holy Spirit over the church. Churches dedicated to the saints are crowned with silver domes. The black domes belong to the convents, while the multi-coloured ones in the Orthodox tradition remind believers of the beauty of the heavenly Jerusalem. They are spherical, hoofed, bulbous and tented shaped. Each shape has its own meaning. The number of domes over the temple tells us their different purpose too. There are temples of 1,2,3,5,7,9,13,25 and 33 domes
